Crop Progress

As reported by NASS on August 27, 2012

SOYBEANS AND COTTON COULD USE A RAIN.  The weather is turning seasonally dry as some concerns are being expressed in major cotton and soybean areas about proper development. However, at week’s end, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 57 percent adequate or surplus, a level much better than the 29 percent five year average and last year’s 44 percent. A good general rain throughout the state is needed to maintain or improve the cotton and soybean crops from their current standing of fair-to-good condition. The corn for grain harvest picked-up momentum and was proceeding at a pace just shy of two weeks ahead of normal. Pastures look good, but armyworms are reported to be a problem. Continue reading

Soybean Rust Update

Author:  Comments Off on Soybean Rust Update

Soybean rust has not been detected infecting soybeans or kudzu in Tennessee as of this date. However, extremely small amounts of soybean rust have been confirmed in several counties in central Mississippi and some in Alabama and Arkansas. This is in the delta about 60 to 70 miles from the border of Tennessee. The amount of rust found was small but active. We are continuing to monitor for soybean rust in 12 soybean sentinel plot locations across Tennessee. Continue reading

Considerations Before Using Finesse in Wheat

Author:  Comments Off on Considerations Before Using Finesse in Wheat

As I mentioned in a previous article Finesse is a good option to take out volunteer Roundup Ready corn before wheat planting.  Moreover, many will likely want to use Finesse pre in wheat for ryegrass control. Indeed Finesse is a good option for these type of weed control situations.  However, please keep in mind that only STS soybeans can be planted double crop in 2013 after a Finesse application this fall.  Accessing a STS soybean variety could be more of a challenge in 2013 for a couple reasons.  Continue reading

Cotton Defoliation Alert

Please see the advisory posted by Dr. Tom Barber, University of Arkansas Extension Cotton Specialist. I strongly agree with his remarks and provide this information to caution Tennessee producers from applying defoliants until the threat of tropical storm Isaac passes.

Early Defoliation Demonstrations and Activity

Author:  Comments Off on Early Defoliation Demonstrations and Activity

On August 21 a defoliation demonstration was sprayed at the entrance to the West TN Research and Education Center in Jackson. It is on the east side of the main drive about half way to the main building. Signs will be posted if you have interest in looking at the treatments. Cotton ranging from just reaching cutout to having nearly 100% open bolls is complicating defoliation decisions. Below are several scenairos to consider: Continue reading
