ANOTHER GOOD HARVEST WEEK DESPITE RAINS

Farmers in West Tennessee at week’s end were essentially finished with corn harvest and will be concentrating next week on cotton and soybean harvest. Middle and East Tennessee growers continued harvesting hay, tobacco, and a few soybean and corn fields. Producers throughout the state were also preparing fields for seeding the 2013 wheat crop. Fungicidal Seed Treatments for Wheat

Fungicidal seed treatments for wheat have been previously recommended in Tennessee and this year is no different. Pathogens residing in or on the seed or in the soil can survive adverse environmental conditions such as drought and winter temperatures by forming survival structures or lying dormant until favorable environmental conditions return.  Hence the drought during 2012 will not reduce the risk posed by seed or soil borne pathogens. In today’s report, old crop corn ending stocks were raised 160 million bushels from last month to 1.181 billion bushels as feed/residual use was slashed 150 million bushels and exports reduced 10 million bushels. The average trade guess for ending stocks was 1.014 billion bushels. Continue reading

As I mentioned in a previous article Finesse is a good option to take out volunteer Roundup Ready corn before wheat planting.  Moreover, many will likely want to use Finesse pre in wheat for ryegrass control. Indeed Finesse is a good option for these type of weed control situations.  However, please keep in mind that only STS soybeans can be planted double crop in 2013 after a Finesse application this fall.  Accessing a STS soybean variety could be more of a challenge in 2013 for a couple reasons.  Continue reading
