COLD FRONT BRINGS FREEZING TEMPERATURES

A cold front brought freezing temperatures and drier air to the state this past week. The drier air allowed farmers to make good progress with corn, cotton, and soybean harvests before late-week rains once again forced them out of the fields. The same drier air also had the additional effect of allowing wheat seedings to progress. Yields continue to be reported as above average. Continue reading

COTTON, SOYBEAN HARVESTS LAG WELL BEHIND AVERAGE

Cold and rainy conditions this fall have delayed soybean and particularly cotton harvests in the majority of the State this season.  The lag in the harvests of these crops has had the additional effect of delayed wheat seedings.  Despite this, yields continue to be reported as above average. As producers start to wrap up 2013 harvest, decisions for 2014 will soon need to be made. Of immediate attention is the decision of whether to plant wheat. The recommended planting window will soon be closing. Other decisions will soon focus on variety selection for 2014 as suppliers generally start booking the varieties for the next year. Considering those decisions, the 2014 crop plan has definitely started as producers start sketching out their 2014 cropping plan. Continue reading

ROW CROP HARVEST AGAIN HAMPERED BY RAIN

Frost continues to bring benefits in the form of helping cotton dry down and open. Soybean, corn, and cotton harvests continue, with above average yields being reported for all. Rain delayed harvest last week and kept producers out of the fields for at least one day across most of the State. Activities last week included wheat seeding and cotton defoliation. September 2013 Tennessee FSA Crop Acres Released

The Farm Service Agency updated their Tennessee certified acres for September and a summary of the planted and failed acres can be found at FSA TN Certified Acres 9 17 13. FSA will continue to make revisions to their certified acres as additional information becomes available. These acres are a major piece of the information used in factoring in the USDA acres in the USDA monthly reports. Continue reading

Control of Volunteer Corn Before Wheat Planting

The corn yields we have had here on the station as well as what I have heard of in farmer’s fields have been quite good.  Even some of my weedy checks are making 160 bu/A! However, I know there are many drowned out areas in the corn that will lower the yield average and likely have stressed corn with small ears that will drop through the snap rollers. With many folks intending to plant wheat behind corn, volunteer corn will likely be a big problem this fall particularly in those areas. Continue reading
