All the cover crops planted last year has led to many calls on management this year. One of the most common calls is do herbicides applied to heavy and, on occasion, sometimes still very green cover get to the soil so they can provide residual Palmer amaranth control? Continue reading

Cover Crops: Planting Green
There have been a lot of questions this spring about planting into green cover crops. We have conducted a fair amount of research on this at Jackson and through trial and error we have found that planting into a green cover crop can be done effectively. Controlling and properly managing the cover crop are the most important things to consider when planting in a green cover (termination 0-7 days prior to planting). Less than complete control of your cover can cause stunting or stand loss of cash crop. Continue reading
Ryegrass Control POST Options in Corn
We will clearly have some ryegrass not controlled by the time corn emerges in a few fields. So what are the options if ryegrass is present in emerged corn? Continue reading
Soybean Burndown Options
It is raining as I write and as soon as it dries corn planting will take priority along with some starting to think about early soybean planting. With the exception of Select Max, there is no major problem with planting corn right around a burndown application which makes it much easier than in soybean where many of the burndown herbicides have plant back restrictions. Ryegrass Escapes at Corn Planting Time
It is clear we have a fairly widespread problem with ryegrass escaping burndowns this spring. I have received many calls on glyphosate completely missing ryegrass and indeed here at Jackson we have seen the same thing. Continue reading
Herbicide Cut-Offs by Wheat Maturity
The wheat has really progressed well over the past two weeks. That short January cold snap had much of the wheat across the state looking very rough. However, since that time it has really come along well and looks to be in very good shape. Continue reading
When should I terminate my cover crop?
As planting nears, people are beginning to decide how and when to terminate their cover crop. Cover crops are utilized for many reasons. However with respect to weed suppression, cover crops should be managed “crop specifically”, not unlike how we think of PRE herbicides. Factors that go into this decision will include cover crop specie(s), what the following crop is, and the size/stage of the cover crop.
Corn Burndown Considerations: Ryegrass and Horseweed
I often get calls this time of year with questions on burning down horseweed or henbit before corn planting that will likely start in 30 to 40 days. Continue reading
