Profitability Outlook Update for 2014
As producers start to wrap up 2013 harvest, decisions for 2014 will soon need to be made. Of immediate attention is the decision of whether to plant wheat. The recommended planting window will soon be closing. Other decisions will soon focus on variety selection for 2014 as suppliers generally start booking the varieties for the next year. Custom Rates- Focus on planting
This has been a difficult start to the planting season with weather delays constantly occurring or at least seeming that way. Generally, the best yields are achieved when crops are planted during their recommended time period which is usually their optimum planting window. Planting is a critical farm operation that needs to be done on a timely basis. Planting on a timely basis generally means planting when the soil temperature and soil moisture are at an optimum level. The optimum time period is usually narrow so producers will have some crop planted in less than optimum conditions. This year is seeing the optimum window even narrower because of the weather. The University of Tennessee Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics is in the process of updating the publication Farm Machinery Custom Rates by Crop Reporting Districts. It was published in 1997 so it is quite out of date. We get numerous request for custom rates throughout the year so it is a very useful publication.
