CONSTANT RAINS HINDER FIELD WORK

Heavy, consistent rainfall continued to be a detriment to producers, especially those who are trying to finish planting soybeans, harvest wheat, or get hay baled. There were only 2 days suitable for field work last week. Some fields have been drowned out, there is the threat of weeds posing a serious problem, and some side-dress nitrogen is being applied by plane. Southwestern Corn Borer and Corn

Moth trapping data indicates the first generation moth flight is peaking (moth trap data). Although there are low numbers in most areas, there is some potential for infestations in non-Bt corn. We have new thresholds based on moth trap catches (see below), but I would encourage scouting whorl stage corn if moth traps in your area are averaging 20 or more moths per week. Continue reading


Water, Water Everywhere – Late Palmer Amaranth Managment Strategies in Soybean and Cotton

This is shaping up to be the “Year of the Pigweed”.  That is how one consultant described our situation which, unfortunately, for many fields is right on the mark. Frequent flooding and hard rains last week followed by more of the same this week make it impossible to spray Palmer amaranth as timely as needed.  Continue reading
