We are 4 weeks early for the typical POST herbicide application window. These applications need to be effective and steward well. In fact stewardship of the herbicides used in those applications is critical. Crops injured by off-target herbicides were numerous last year. While many think about either dicamba or 2,4-D for off-target concerns, last year clethodim drift on corn was the most widely reported issue across the state.
In my opinion, there were a couple reasons for that. First, with glyphosate no longer working on 5 grass species, clethodim is now used like never before as the “go to” for burndown. Second, small corn is highly susceptible to clethodim.
Remember the fundamentals of good herbicide stewardship. When making herbicide applications please pay attention to wind speed, wind direction, use labeled drift reduction agents, keep boom height within 24” of the crop, etc. Most importantly, apply herbicides LABELED for use on the particular crop in the field.
Only use Enlist One in Enlist crops. Never use the ester formulation of 2,4-D in the summer.
Engenia, Stryax, and Tavium are the only dicamba herbicides labeled for over-the-top applications in Xtend crops. Please be mindful of all the rules that go along with applying those herbicides.
