This large wheat crop is taking a lot of time and labor this summer. This is both good and bad. The good news is the wheat is yielding very well which comes at a good time to get some bills paid. The bad news is that it is very slow going as much of it is laying down and the great yields take quite a bit of labor to get it to the granary. All this time and labor devoted to the wheat harvest has delayed herbicide applications in cotton and early planted soybeans. Continue reading

Cotton Progress
The long agonizing cotton planting season has come to a close. I have heard that a few folks were spot planting some wet spots this week. This May 50th planted cotton I hope will not turn into as one consultant said an “expensive cover crop”. At the very least it should help compete with weeds in those areas. Continue reading
Weed Management in Late Planted Corn
It appears there will be a great deal of late May and June planted corn in Tennessee this year. Temperatures are beginning to warm up, and this late planted corn will grow very quickly. Moreover the Palmer amaranth with this weather can emerge and grow to 8” in just 13 days. Therefore if this late planted corn does not have a pre emerge applied it will need to be sprayed soon. Two Pass Weed Control Programs in Corn are Providing Much Better Weed Control
Many folks the past two weeks have found that they need to apply a “layby” herbicide application to their corn. I have gotten a number of calls from some of these folks who were dismayed that their pre applied herbicide had given out some time ago. In many cases they are reporting that they now have 18 to 24” Palmer amaranth up in their big corn. Continue reading
Palmer Amaranth Management Critical Over the Next 3 Weeks
I know this has been a frustrating planting season to say the least. Replanting has been more the rule than the exception this spring. There have been reports of fields that were first planted to corn then replanted to cotton and now will likely be replanted to soybean. With all the troubles planting and replanting this spring please do not forget to manage Palmer amaranth or you may have to replant yet again just to control the pigweed. These June weather conditions are shaping up to be a perfect Palmer amaranth storm! Continue reading
