The 2012 corn hybrid data is now posted on www.utcrops.com. Needless to say, yields are lower than typical in some locations due to limited rainfall, but results reflect the conditions growers experienced this season. Extremely low yielding trials may not be helpful when making hybrid selections for next year. Instead, growers should put more focus on data generated in locations that received better rainfall, the Milan REC irrigated data or data from 2011 when making hybrid choices.

SDS or Foliar Burn in Soybean??
For those still intending to apply a foliar fungicide to soybean, if you are using a triazole or triazole-containing product please be careful about the additives you include. Some folks are reporting foliar leaf burn very similar in appearance to Sudden Death Syndrome (yellow to brown areas between leaf veins). Injury seems to be the result of adding additional products (crop oil, glyphosate, micronutrients, some insecticides) not required on the fungicide label, to a triazole product. The hot weather we have been experiencing may be making the situation worse. Continue reading
Corn Harvest- Not Full Swing Yet
Corn harvest will hit full swing over the next two weeks, however a short list of growers actually got started during the last week in July. Comments about what has been harvested range from ‘decent-I was pleasantly surprised’ to ‘terrible-this is my worst year ever’ with yields from around 30 bushels per acre up to close to 290 (very early March planted irrigated). Continue reading
Tracking Asian Soybean Rust
Dry weather has not been conducive to foliar diseases in soybean this season. While some diseases picked up some momentum under irrigation or in areas that finally received rains in July, levels range from nonexistent to moderate around the state. Asian soybean rust has been identified primarily in the gulf area with the latest find in southeastern AR (Desha county) across the river from Greenville, MS. Continue reading
Small Amount of Southern Rust reported this week
Reports of Southern rust in corn have come in this week. Southern rust in large amounts coming into corn prior to dent can have an effect on yield. It typically shows up very late in our growing season, making a late fungicide spray generally unnecessary. Continue reading
Should I Cut Drought Stressed Corn for Forage?
The continued dry weather has affected pasture quality and increased the calls from producers feeding livestock who are trying to determine whether it would be more profitable to feed their corn as silage rather than harvest stressed fields for grain. Drought stressed corn is Continue reading
Estimating Corn Yields in a Dry Year
With the current heat wave and continuing lack of rain, non-irrigated corn is declining in quality daily. Where corn must be harvested for grain, getting some idea of yield potential can help us make decisions about the crop- whether to revisit the amounts contracted or call the crop insurance adjustor. Continue reading
Corn, Nitrates and Forage Testing
The following is copied from an email sent to extension agents from Debbie Joines, Plant and Soil Testing lab in Nashville concerning nitrate testing in forages including drought stressed corn that may end up being used for forage. Continue reading
