Defoliation update for 24 Sept 2026
Fall has arrived. Now that things have cooled off considerably, our defoliation concoction should be adjusted. In the YouTube video linked in this blog, I provide an update on what is working and what I’ll be using moving forward.
I HAVE BEEN running 2 ounces of thidiazuron, 4 ounces Folex, 12 ounces of Terminate and 12 ounces of Prep as either a single shot or as the first shot of a two shot mix. With night temps consistently below 65F, the value of thidiazuron decreases substantially. With several nights in the upper 50s and no nights above 65 in the 5 day forecast, I’m not including thidiazuron in my mix.
Now, Folex is going to have to do the heavy lifting in my first shot. My rate of Folex is increasing to 7 ounces in the first shot. I’m still including 16-24 ounces of boll opener- feel free to split that between a standard 6 lb ethephon product and an ethephon product which includes cyclanilide, if you so desire.
In a second shot, I’m running either 8 ounces of Folex plus a pint of a 6 lb ethephon or I’m running a PPO with a pint of a 6 lb ethephon. I’ve been able to get away with a single shot on some acres, but most have required two.
