It is back to the future in West Tennessee. Replacing hoses and solenoids on hoods and shovels on cultivators was common back in 2008 to 2010 when glyphosate failed on pigweed. There have been recent reports of folks trying to get hoods and field cultivators in working order.  The reason for this is they are trying to knock down Palmer amaranth that has escaped dicamba + glufosinate applications.

One of the more consistent hooded applications to take out large escaped Palmer amaranth back in 2008 was paraquat + flumioxazin + crop oil.  This was obviously a very hot mixture and one had to be careful to keep it off the cotton.  It can also gum up a tank, strainers and screens if the water pH is too high.  It is best to acidify the tank first with AMS or some acidifying agent to make sure those herbicides mix well.

One difference with the resistant weed problem in 2008 compared to 2026 is that glyphosate-resistant goosegrass is also present with the pigweed in some fields.  If that is the case, then diuron at 32 oz/A + MSMA 2.67 pt/A would be a better choice as the MSMA can be more effective on grass than paraquat.

Another difference between 2008 and 2026 is autosteer. This should help on going a little faster and help mitigate “lightning strikes” that can come from a brief lack of focus.
