This planting season is off to a very early and quick start. At the current pace many acres will be planted by Easter Sunday. The questions continue to be on how to contend with ryegrass.
The most recent questions are what can be done quickly to remove ryegrass that has escaped earlier burndown attempts. Some have tried to burndown ryegrass with tankmixes of glyphosate + Valor with mixed results on success (Picture 1).
Typically, when ryegrass escapes earlier burndown attempts it becomes doubly hard to do anything with. The best approach is to use one of the burner herbicides like Sharpen + glyphosate, Reviton + glyphosate, or paraquat alone.
When ryegrass gets a foot or better tall and is in the boot stage, often some kind of two pass approach will be needed to get something close to good control. A sequential application of paraquat applied about 10 days apart can be successful. Once the crop emerges then the last best option would be Liberty applied in the middle of a hot sunny day.
