Update on sugarcane aphid in sorghum (July 22)

First, let me state that I am not aware of any fields that currently require an insecticide application for sugarcane aphids. However, I expect this to change in the very near future. Sub-threshold populations have been observed in Hardin, Hardeman, Chester, Henderson, Haywood, Shelby, Tipton, Lauderdale, and Dyer Counties. I’m sure aphids are present in some sorghum fields for all the counties bordering Mississippi (and probably Alabama). I expect sugarcane aphids to continue to spread northward over the next several weeks.

Please refer to previous article on management suggestions. With rare exception, the only two insecticides I recommend to control sugarcane aphids are Transform WG (1-1.5 oz/acre) and Sivanto (4-5 oz/acre).
