February Weed Control Considerations

A number of calls have come in concerning weed control in wheat. Of these, there have been several calls about controlling Poa in wheat.  At this date metribuzin, Powerflex or Osprey will provide some control depending upon the size of the Poa. If the Poa is large then these herbicides will probably not provide complete control but should hold it back enough for the wheat to outgrow it.

Metribuzin, Powerflex and Osprey can injure wheat.  In the case of metribuzin please be careful if the field contains a lot of eroded hill sides.  We have seen some extreme wheat injury in the past from metribuzin rates above 2 ozs in fields that have lost a lot of top soil. In the case of  Powerflex or Osprey be cautious of applying those herbicides within a couple weeks of a nitrogen application as wheat stunting can occur.

There have been a few calls coming in with folks interested in spraying wild garlic (onions) in wheat.  The main concern is whether or not there is enough new growth on the wild garlic to obtain good control with Harmony Extra.  Harmony Extra is primarily taken up through the foliage.  Therefore new growth in the spring is essential to obtain good control.  The Harmony Extra label states that 2 to 4 inches of new growth from stressed weeds is essential for good control.  The mistake many make is to look for the new growth at the end of the garlic leaf.    The new growth actually comes from the bulb area and not from the end of the leaf.
