The good lord is looking out for us as DD60 accumulation is trending pretty close to the long term average (See Table Below). This is a bit of a surprise to me considering the cold April and early May as well as the cool spell around July 4th. However much of our cotton was planted around Memorial Day May 27 to June 2 and missed the cool temperatures of early May. Moreover a good percentage of the cotton planted around Memorial Day was later replanted around June 7th to June 15. I know there is a bit of spot rereplanting as late as June 20th in some fields. So if you take into account a majority of our cotton crop is a May 27th on to June20th planted crop that helps explain the good DD60 accumulation. At Jackson for example from May 27 to July 20 34 days have provided more DD60s than long term average for that day and 21 have been less. Hopefully we will keep this trend up through September!
A good percentage of our cotton is well into flower. We should see even the late replant start to flower this week with DD60 accumulation in that 800 range. This late replant will then need another 850 DD60s to get to an open boll. If the current heat unit accumulation pace continues that should be somewhere around Sept 12. It goes without saying we will need a nice warm September.
