Sugarcane Beetles in Corn (Lesson Learned)

SugarCB+dam1-webI’ve only had two calls, both from adjacent farms, about sugarcane beetles in corn, but they were “impressive” infestations.  The fields were near Ripley and were first year corn behind pasture.  This is a favorite scenario for problems with sugarcane beetles and other below-ground pests like wireworms.  In short, this is a maximum risk situation where “Caddilac” seed treatment rates like Poncho 500, Poncho 1250 or Cruiser 500 are strongly recommended.  Another and possibly better option is to use an in-furrow insecticide spray with bifenthrin (e.g., Brigade, Capture LFR, etc.).  In-furrow granular insecticides could also be used.  Frankly, recent data suggests that an in-furrow spray of bifenthrin (3-4 oz/acre) or Poncho 1250 is the best treatment for sugarcane beetle.  However, I’ve not seen all the alternatives in action.  The infestations above were devastating to the point of requiring replanting (see pictures below).  Foilar insecticide applications, even if propoerly timed, are really not worth the effort.  They seldom to much if any good because the beetles spend most of their time underground.
