Small Amount of Southern Rust reported this week

Reports of Southern rust in corn have come in this week.  Southern rust in large amounts coming into corn prior to dent can have an effect on yield.  It typically shows up very late in our growing season, making a late fungicide spray generally unnecessary.  A recommendation to spray a triazole combination product (such as Headline AMP, Stratego YLD, Quilt Xcel) was made on a field in Fayette county where well-watered corn that was not denting had a healthy dose of Southern rust showing on the leaves.   We would suggest checking irrigated corn for presence of disease and treating only when surface pustules can be found and corn is not denting.  Nonirrigated fields have had very low disease pressure in general and many of these fields are denting and far enough along that late rust should not impact yields.
