We have seen a major flush of grasses and Palmer pigweed in many of the early planted corn fields. A follow-up herbicide application will be necessary in these cases. With some spotted replant, corn is in various stages of development in these fields as well. Ranges in corn maturity can make timing post emergence applications a challenge. Determining the maturity of corn on its height alone after it has endured water logged stress can be misleading. The best way to determine corn maturity is to count the number of fully opened leaves (leaf collars) rather than the plant’s height. Listed below are some of the corn maturity cutoff stages for the more popular post applied herbicides.
