Temik Availability

Bayer CropScience announced last week that they are discontinuing any plans for production of Temik 15G.  They had not manufactured any Temik since July 2010.  Thus, only Temik that is currently in the supply chain will be available.  Previously, there had been an announcement that the Temik registration would not be renewed, and that all Temik use would be phased out by 2014.

The primary use of Temik in Tennessee as been for thrips and nematode control in cotton.  In recent years, Temik’s use had been largely replaced by insecticide seed treatments.  However, Temik is still used in places where nematode pests pose a significant problem.  There was also some use for those having chronic problems with early season spider mites.  The insecticide industry will have some catching up to find a suitable and effective replacement for this product.  In the opinions of most university plant pathologists I’ve spoken with, current nematicidal seed treatments do not provide the level of crop protection as does Temik.
