I’ve gotten several calls about a source of pheromone and moth traps for southwestern corn borer (SWCB). Below is the source where we get our traps, and this is also our source for sweep nets. I strongly recommend that anyone who grows non-Bt corn invest in moth traps for monitoring SWCB populations. This is especially important in areas with a history of problems.  Just a few traps on a farm are generally necessary. You can also order Vapona® kill strips. They are not really necessary; however, counting dead moths is easier.

I’ve also included a link to a document with guidelines about using traps and interpreting the results (link here). These guidelines are not intended to replace scouting, but SWCB trapping is very predictive of where and when infestations are more likely. I’ve included a picture of the bucket style trap (below).
