Managing Ryegrass Burndown Escapes and Grain Sorghum Herbicide Questions

Ryegrass surviving glyphosate burndown continues to be a common call the last few days. The best option for fields to be planted to corn or grain sorghum in these cases is Gramoxone at 48 oz/A plus atrazine. If the field is to be planted to soybean or cotton then glyphosate tankmixed with Select would be the best option.

It is becoming clear that there is a good bit of poor information on what herbicides can be used near grain sorghum planting. Graminicides like the Select mentioned above have a 30 day plant back to grain sorghum. This wait period is regardless of herbicide rate.

Herbicides like 2,4-D and dicamba should not be applied near grain sorghum planting as they can cause stand establishment problems. For 2,4-D the rate is no more than 16 oz/A and applied no closer to planting than 7 days. The label direction for burndown with dicamba in grain sorghum is no more than 8 oz/A and no closer to grain sorghum planting than 15 days.

Herbicides such as Fierce and Princep cannot be used in grain sorghum. Moreover be cautious utilizing atrazine PRE emergence in grain sorghum because some injury can occur depending on environmental and/or planting conditions (e.g. leaving the slot open). It is best to use herbicides like atrazine or dicamba after grain sorghum gets 3 or 4 leaves on it.
