 HOT, DRY WEATHER CONTINUED

It was another hot, dry week this past week with 6.5 days suitable for field work. The cotton crop has responded well to these conditions, although development remained two weeks behind average. All crops were rated in good-to-excellent condition. Corn has begun to dry down with moisture levels reported in the 20-25% range. Continue reading

 CORN HARVEST HAS BEGUN

Corn harvest for grain began on a limited scale last week, well behind both last year and the 5-year average. Despite the delay, producers are happy with early yields. Hot, dry weather across the state resulted in 6.5 days suitable for field work. Row crops are rated in good-to-excellent condition and, despite cotton development being behind, producers expect strong yields. Continue reading

 CROPS RECEIVE SOME MUCH NEEDED HEAT

This past week farmers across the state received a slight reprieve from the rain, with an average of 5 days being suitable for field work. Cotton received some much needed heat units, although the crop still lags almost two weeks behind normal development. All crops remain in good-to-excellent condition. Continue reading

 TOBACCO HARVEST HAS BEGUN

Tobacco producers began harvesting this past week. The wet conditions experienced throughout the summer have proved favorable for row crops, with corn, cotton and soybeans rated in good-to-excellent condition at weeks end. A short period of hot dry weather would be welcome in order to dry down the corn crop and provide heat units for the cotton crop. Continue reading

 WET CONDITIONS PERSIST, HIGHER THAN AVERAGE YIELDS EXPECTED

Rain continued this past week, with only 3 days suitable for field work across the state. The down side of the persistent rainfall is the farmers’ inability to stay ahead of weed and insect problems. On a positive note, there are excellent chances of harvesting an exceptional crop this fall. Continue reading
