CROPS REMAIN IN MOSTLY GOOD-TO-EXCELLENT CONDITION

The corn, cotton, soybean, and tobacco crops in Tennessee remain in mostly good-to-excellent condition in spite of the excessive heat and spotty rainfall. Some early planted corn acres are maturing rapidly, but overall the crop is progressing at a near normal rate. Soybeans are setting pods at a pace about a week behind the five-year average and are in need of moisture. Cotton is setting bolls at a pace also one week behind the five-year average. Weekly Crop Marketing Comments for July 27

Prices and comments are through Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Corn, cotton, and wheat prices are up and soybeans down for the week through Wednesday. The September U.S. Dollar Index was trading before the close at 74.29, down 0.11 since last Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 12,303; down 378 points through Wednesday. Crude Oil was trading before the close at 97.43 a barrel, down 2.28 a barrel since last Friday. The cotton market rebounded from a 10 month low early in the week on an overdue correction. The grain and soybean markets continue to focus on the weather which is drawing interest from the funds. Continue reading

The Madison County Extension Service is sponsoring a Farmland Legacy meeting on estate and succession planning on Wednesday, August 10 at the West Tennessee Research Education Center, 605 Airways Blvd., Jackson, Tennessee. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the program will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Lunch is provided and there is no cost to attend. Topics to be covered include Why Succession Planning, Family Discussion, Taking Stock, Retirement Planning, and Estate Planning. SHOWERS PROVIDE SOME RELIEF; MORE RAIN IS NEEDED IN MOST AREAS

A high pressure system positioned over Tennessee prevented widespread rainfall this week; however, crops received some relief from afternoon and evening rainfall. Crops remain in mostly good condition, especially for late July. Crops were beginning to show stress at week’s end from the extreme temperatures and inadequate moisture. Soybeans are blooming and setting pods at a pace about a week to ten days behind the five-year average. Cotton is setting bolls at a pace almost a week behind the five-year average. Corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat prices are mixed for the week. The September U.S. Dollar Index was trading before the close at 74.40, down 0.13 since last Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average before the close was 12,684; up 204 points for the week. Crude Oil was trading before the close at 99.71 a barrel, up 2.10 a barrel since last Friday. The grain and soybean markets focused on the weather this week while the cotton market languished on weak demand. Continue reading

HIGH TEMPS PERSIST ACROSS TENNESSEE.  Above normal temperatures and variable precipitation headlined the state’s weather last week. Scattered showers were reported in areas across the state; however, there were reports of crops showing signs of heat stress in some areas. Soybean growers were busy this week making post emergence and fungicide applications. Continue reading
