 HARVEST OF FALL CROPS CONTINUES

Tennessee farmers took advantage of the fall-like weather last week and made good progress harvesting row crops. With virtually the entire corn crop now mature, harvest is surpassing the normal progress pace by a few days. Two-thirds of the state’s cotton acreage has been defoliated with just over a tenth of the acreage harvested. Most of the wheat seeded to date is for silage or pasture. Tobacco growers also continued harvest with progress proceeding at the normal pace. Tobacco leaf stripping has begun on a very limited basis. Pastures and Cattle were rated in mostly fair-to-good condition.

There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork across the state. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 2 percent very short, 17 percent short, 78 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 4 percent very short, 23 percent short, 72 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Temperatures averaged 2 to 6 degrees below normal across Tennessee last week. Rainfall averaged below normal over most of the state.
