As reported by NASS on June 20, 2011
RAIN ARRIVES AS WHEAT HARVEST PROGRESSES. A slow-moving front dropped precipitation across most of Tennessee last week, creating improved conditions for spring-planted crops. Normal temperatures coupled with rains provided a welcome relief for farmers concerned about the effect of hot and dry weather earlier this month. In between rains, farmers were busy harvesting winter wheat, planting double-cropped soybeans, transplanting tobacco, and finishing up the first hay harvest of the season. By the end of the week, nearly all of the winter wheat crop had hit maturity, with three-quarters of the crop harvested. Storms brought hail to parts of the state last week, but no major livestock or crop damage was reported.
There were 5 days suitable for fieldwork across the state. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 3 percent very short, 21 percent short, 65 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 5 percent very short, 23 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus. Temperatures averaged 4 degrees above normal in West Tennessee and near normal elsewhere. Precipitation levels were above normal across the state.
